The
Selenga River is the main tributary of Lake Baikal. It flows
out from the Mongolian Lake Hubsugul, and its length is 1024 km. It accounts
for about half of the total volume of all river inflow into Lake Baikal.
The banks of the river are very picturesque. The capital of the Republic
of Buryatia, Ulan Ude, is located at the junction of the Selenga and Uda.
At the river’s mouth, it forms the only freshwater delta in the
world with a surface area of more than 600 square meters. The Selenga
River is ideal for kayaking, with possible trips ranging from several
hours to ten days.
The
Selenga River Delta - is one of the key ornithological sites
of Eastern Siberia. This unique eco-system occupies more then 600 square
meters. Consisting of a host of channels, islets, and reed and sedge thickets,
it is an extremely picturesque and diverse area. The Selenga River Delta
plays a very important role in the preservation of flying and nesting
birds’ populations. The Delta is included in a list of the wetlands
of international importance as a unique place of waterfowl’s dwelling.
The
Turka River is a beautiful mountain river that runs through a
valley between the Golondinsky and Ulan-Burgusy mountain ranges and flows
into Lake Baikal.
There are many beautiful sites along the river. While kayaking, it is
possible to see wild animals such as wild deer, fox and hare. There are
excellent opportunities for fishing.
